Why Japanese People Visit Shrines and Draw Omikuji

In Japan, it is a common custom to visit shrines in your local area.

Japanese people believe that gods live in these places, so they go there to pray and show respect.

When visiting a shrine, many people try something called “Omikuji.”

Omikuji is a fortune-telling paper that shows your current luck.

The results range from “great luck” (Daikichi) to “bad luck” (Kyo), with several levels in between.

The paper also includes advice from the gods about different aspects of life, such as love, work, and business.

After reading the fortune, people usually tie the paper to a special place at the shrine.

This is believed to leave your luck, especially bad luck, at the shrine.

For many people, drawing Omikuji is one of the most enjoyable parts of visiting a shrine.

I will write more about another important custom, “offering money,” in the next post.
