First Garlic Scapes Harvest From My Home Garden
Today I harvested garlic scapes from my small home garden in Japan.

I noticed something interesting right away.
The garlic scapes from my garden were naturally curled and twisted, while the ones sold in stores are usually perfectly straight.

After researching a little, I learned that naturally grown garlic scapes often curl as they grow toward sunlight.
Commercial products are usually selected and trimmed for appearance and uniformity.
The thin pointed tips can become a little tough, so I trimmed those parts off and kept the thicker stems for cooking.

The texture was crisp and fresh, and the garlic aroma was much stronger than store-bought vegetables.
Freshly harvested vegetables really have a different kind of flavor.
I am planning to stir-fry them simply with pork and a little salt.
Sometimes the simplest cooking methods are the best.

Home gardening keeps teaching me the difference between “vegetables for selling” and “vegetables for eating.”
